It's almost been five weeks since the 6.0-magnitude earthquake hit Napa, my hometown of choice since 2008. Life has been a bit like a roller coaster since then, with after shocks and a still shocked community. Seeing everyone come together and help each other has been an amazing experience in this town. Things that had seemed important in our lives until then just aren't anymore and once again we are trying to be more conscious about our life-styles, living in the present moment and being compassionate. Focussing on what's really important almost becomes a mantra to us.
That being said - my husband and I decided to leave town with our niece about 10 hours after the earthquake [and after we had made sure everyone around us was OK]. We had planned a hiking trip to Yosemite Park and wondered if we should postpone the trip after what had happened. But leaving this town that all of a sudden had become a news headline was the best we could have done. We just needed to feel safe again. We enjoyed long hikes and quiet nights and my niece loved the excursion into the rural areas of Yosemite, keeping herself warm with one of my Ehecatl hats!
Returning to Napa we found out that our studio still was without electricity and it has been without electricity since it went out in the early hours of September 24.
With all the distraction that this earthquake has caused and my lack of studio time [in the interim I have a tiny and somewhat functioning workspace setup in our garage] all of a sudden there seems to be time for things that have long been procrastinated... one of them is to arrange for a photo shoot for some of my new products [see my dear friend Israel Valencia of Infinity Visuals photographing one of my dresses].
Another one of my neglected projects was to finally update my website and research some new and potential materials for some new YOLOTLI products - locally! A field trip to an amazing felt artist in the area is scheduled for October 20. By then I hope to come back to a well illuminated studio!
